I swear this is going to be a 15 minutes written rant since I have procrastinated studying for my final exam since last week, but here’s something I want to talk about:
WARNING: Written super fast and I could not care less if I make sense nor if I have a proper grammar
What is the ideal education system? I know that there’s no way we can do a one-fit-all system for all the different people in the society, but I have seen way too many people say that the current system is no good and rather killed their will to study. There are too many instances where we see people actually learn things they like easily.
Is school hard because most of the subjects are not interesting? I would not say that true. Isn’t it fascinating to see why the work works and why a curved line path will roll a ball faster than a straight line would? Why is studying it in class so boring and make me wish I could go home and sleep instead?
Why do I could watch a YouTube video about thermodynamics and enjoyed it and when I study it in class it becomes incomprehensible? Is it because the one in class need me to do math while YouTube give me a holistic explanation without actual math? Do I hate math?
But there is no way I hate math when I spent two days meddling with derivation and integration just to know if I actually could derive a formula that I need from it. If I hate it I would stay away and not even try. Then why?
The teachers said that we need to understand and not to memorize. But what is understanding, anyway? Could it be achieved by a regular person like me in a class that explains a 20-pages chapter in the textbook in two hours? Am I not a regular person but rather someone who is really slow at understanding something?
If the teachers want us to understand, why don’t they make us understand in the first place? Yes. They do teach in class. Yes. They do ask if we understand. Yes. We do say that we understand. Yes. We lie. But whose fault is it, really? Time is moving too fast for us students, too many questions asked and we would be behind the target.
They say that people who can’t teach things and make it easy to understand don’t actually understand the topic. Does that mean my teachers don’t understand their lecture? There is no way. They have achieved postgraduate degrees in said lecture. They must have understood it.
Should we change the curriculum and makes it slower for students to understand? Like, understand how it come from, the history, actually making it interesting…
Actually, is being interested in the lecture actually important? We don’t need it when we work, don’t we? No one’s gonna ask how thermodynamics even get to this. No one’s going to ask how Carnot makes his heat engine. We just need to use the engine. Make it efficient. No one going to ask…
But then, if I am not going to need to make an efficient engine and I am not interested in it, why do I even study this in the first place?
That’s 15 minutes of writing.
